M3GAN is a horror story about a life-like doll assembled at a toy factory by a robotic engineer that begins to take on a life of it’s own. Director Gerard Johnstone kicks off the new year with killer doll named M3GAN, a doll born in a lab and designed by roboticist Gemma (excellently played by Allison Williams). The four foot doll however takes on an attitude of her own.
M3GAN (body played by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis) is a fresh take on the horror genre that lurks between humor an horror while delivering on tension thrills. The story centers around young Cady (Violet McGraw) who is taken in by her aunt Gemma after her parents were killed in a car accident.
The doll was programmed to be a child’s bff as it can watch, observe, listen, teach and dance (Amie Donald is a real-life child dancer and shows it off). However, M3Gan can be pure evil from the start and run through the woods on all fours destroying anything she despises. Just don’t lend her your ear.
The killing holds back on the graphic part keeping the movie at PG-13. Her looks are deceiving but unimaginable consequences then big decisions follow. I do wonder why the doll had to have 2 actors, A body and a voice. Why not just one?
Williams’ performance was so perfect and with the supporting cast, January is starting the new year off just right. I expect we will see M3Gan return soon and with her rival Bruce. Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster know the horror fans very true. The movie opens in theaters January 6, 2023. 4 stars
