And now, the end is here–all good things must reach a climax. The greatest saga that was born 42 years ago gets a deserving send-off that gives us what we expected. From the get-go the story starts off quick and barely comes up for air. The old Resistance crew is back (with Carrie Fisher being mostly super-imposed with old clips) with little to delve into any character. Taking center stage are Daisy Riddle’ Rey, Chewbacca with more responsibilities, Oscar Isaac as Poe alongside John Boyega’s Finn.
Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren shows up with his other Dark Side pal Ian McDiarmid’s who still enjoys being Emperor Palpatine Sith lord. There are questions or hints if Rey has a dark side hidden in her. With lots of familar faces from old school it made me question who actually did or did not die. Of course Carrie Fisher passed away in real life. Rey, handling her light saber and fighting Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), looked almost too fake with her jumping and back flips.
This ‘final’ chapter fuels a lot of anxiety yet comes in at a disappointment with it’s execution. If you are an advid Star Wars fan it did achieve it’s goal but with an abundance of loose ends to sew together. Abrams is a good director and he can manipulate his way around the directors chair especially in this film but with lots of special effects and potential. Mission not completed. ***
