Lately, Hollywood seems to keep focusing on sequels, prequels and re-boots. Sometime it’s a gamble that pays off. Others-well they just fade into the scrap box. Hollywood’s gander worked and this latest edition in the MCU is a re-boot of the superhero Spider-Man staring Tom Holland this time as the web-slinging crime fighter. This is Holland’s second appearance as Spider-Man after (“Captain America: Civil War”) but actually begins years prior to that as Peter Parker (aka: Spider-Man) is bent on becoming an Avenger as Tony Stark (Iron-Man) as his mentor. Peter attempts to fall back on his normal daily life routines balancing his crime fighting skills and school while living with his Aunt May (Marisa Tumei).
That said, he stumbles on to a junk yard salvage dude, Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) who becomes metal flying vulture and everything of any meaning to Peter is threatened. Of course there are video game looking fights but it’s fun to see the web slinger swing into action. Tony Stark makes a few cameo appearances as Iron-Man and coaches Peter about his very expensive suit and to understand it better. It’s not at all about Iron-Man. It’s a Spider-Man and Peter Parker’s ego and his high school sweetheart Lizz (Laura Harrier). To sum it up and keep this review short, it’s a very well made film by Jon Watts (Cop Car 2015) and the writers made it a worthy film. The Vulture was well played by Michael Keaton as a fling Birdman with wings.
I did wonder how Spider-Man’s suit protects him from injuries like being tossed around and thrown off busses. That must be one hell of a suit aside from his magic spider bite and with Keaton giving a flying performance, the acting is very good. The other characters are just there for support other than your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The now 21 year-old Tom Holland started shooting this movie when he was a teenager and will return in the MCU. Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr., Laura Harrier with Jacob Batalon as Peter’s close friend, Ned. The film opens everywhere July 7, 2017 with a running time of 140 minutes and as always stay for the 2 post-credit snipits. 4 (out of 5) stars.
