Based on a childhood book by Judy Blume “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret” is very much worth the wait as it is one of the best films out there. You’ll laugh, cry, smile and every happy enjoyment a movie should display.
Although the 1970’s novel is geared for young girls, their mothers and grandmothers it tells the story about six grader Margaret Simon (Abby Ryder) dealing with adolescence meeting new friends and religious differences between her family and grandparents from both sides with no internet, computers or cell phones. My how times have changed.
Margaret mother (Rachael McAdams) gives her total support to her daughter and makes this movie directed by Kelly Fremon Craig so wonderful and a joy to watch. Kathy Bates exhibits a grand performance as one of the grandparents with her religious views. The movie is rated PG-13 for sexual education and suggestive material. The only question I had is when Margaret’s dad (Benny Saldie) cut his hand on a lawnmower, went in to get it bandaged and the next scene I was searching for the bandaid I never found but I’m too picky.
The Lionsgate movie opens everywhere Friday and it’s a family affair. Lets hope audiences rapturously receive it. 5/5 stars
