Yesterday (2019)

Himesh Patel as Jack Malik in “Yesterday,” directed by Danny Boyle.

How many times have you or perhaps someone you know woke up to a dream so surreal they actually live it. There have been movies about a man then a woman being knocked out then waking up reading thoughts of others and that was cool. Now you need to believe in “Yesterday”. A Danny Boyle film (“Slumdog Millionaire“). It’s a brilliant film penned by Richard Curtis (“Love Actually“) about a struggling musician (Hamish Patel) who will play to a street crowd just to earn a few bucks. After leaving one of his mini concerts on his motorcycle he gets in an accident during a short blackout.

He wakes up in a world only he can relate to all involving the Beatles and their music. Jack’s realm is so surreal he, with a little help from his friend Ed Sheeran, is encouraged to tour as millions of followers around his world across the pond and in the States have never heard of the Beatles so his flare is new and fresh to everyone. Finally we have some fresh material at the theaters with a comedic swing that doesn’t have capes or sparks flying from fingertips. Someone in the film actually suggests “Hey Dude” in lieu of “Hey Jude”. So if you believe in Yesterday you need to see “Yesterday” today or when you can, as it hits the big screen in an entertaining two hours Friday June 27. The film also features Sophia Di Martino, Ellise Chappell as Lucy and Meera Syal and Lily James as his love interest Ellie. 4 stars (out of 5)
