Director Ry Russo-Young (Before I Fall) is a young writer who likes young actors for her roles. In “The Sun Is Also A Star” she took risks and those risks are not great ones. She sets her story in New York city all in one day about two young adults who meet in the crowed streets. Natasha, a young black female (Yara Shahidi from Black-ish) and Daniel, a young asian male (Charles Melton of Riverdale). Daniel saves Natasha’s from a speeding car and he pulls all his masculinity stunts and flirtatiously tries hard to convince her they are destined for one another.
All this in a twelve hour day as they have speed dates. She is on a tight schedule to fight deportation and he is trying to be a doctor. He visualizes her as his wife, frequent a karaoke bar and meets each’s parents while he is trying to figure out her rush to get away from him. She breaks her silence to him about that day possibly being the last time they will ever meet again. He’s a poet and she believes in scientific facts as that is the only way dreams come true. This movie is based on the novel of the same name by Nicola Yoon and corny but watchable with sun glasses. 2 out of 5
