Guy Richie has made a strong attempt to return to his roots in a misguided complex film in this fast paced comedy that isn’t his normal fare. His last meg-bucks film “Aladdin” was a big thing for him and Will Smith. In The Gentlemen which opens on January 24, has a strong cast with the main lead being Matthew McConaughey who plays rich and powerful drug lord Mickey Pearson who owns a marijuana industry. He is now interested in retiring and has his pot farm up for grabs to the highest seller. This draws a number of interested buyers including tabloid reporter (Fletcher) Huge Grant, Coach (Colin Farrell) Dr. Eye (Henry Golding) and another vulcher Ray (Charlie Hunnam) who earns his paycheck in this film.
Everybody involved has their own ideas for the farm but in bad intent. This is where Richie gets things moving fast with lots of flashbacks to keep us guessing as the film starts with somebody getting picked off from behind while Mickey is enjoying a drink at a pub. His drink turns into a bloody mary that quick and as things progress we find out the real story full of assumptions with each party trying to get the upper hand. There is no gentlemen in The Gentlemen other than the nice suits Mickey wears and the nice clothes his empire queen wife (Michelle Dockery) sports. Beware of the dirty dialogue, drug gangs and frozen bodies in meat freezers you will get several good looks at. Get used to Guy Richie’s films as they are not ordinary movies but does grab your attention just as one of McConauhey’s last films The Beach Bum did. 3 Stars (out of 5).
