Rose Byrne and Tiffany Haddish in Paramount’s Like A Boss

Every one in their life has a best friend and hopefully still has that BFF. Some are joined together like glue with most growing up together and attending school. Most are ambitious and start up a business as a team. It’s a crapshoot just like the film industry or in the case of Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne’s (together and/or solo) latest effort “Like A Boss” which opens everywhere January 10. **

The story is simple and easy to figure out the ending as best friends Mia (Haddish) and Mel (Byrne) own their own cosmetics business they built from scratch and take great pride in. It soon becomes known the business is hurting on money as one breaks the news to the other. Things escalate which results in the best friends going after each other throats until competitor Claire (Selma Hayek) steps in and offers them a buyout.

This leads to the firing of 1st hand Barrett (Billy Porter) who not only comes to us with great acting capabilities but some of the funniest lines and gestures the movie has to offer. Director Miquel Arteta does a good job at keeping this raunchy comedy moving right along for 90 minutes and even though versatile actress Jennifer Coolidge (American Pie-1999) shows us a lot of screen time and we see a “pussy cake” displayed and office golf lessons given with shattering results, it’s just wasted talent. The movie sputters half way through and we already know where this is going. But, hey, it’s January and there is nothing out there to play competitor. The beauty business is going ugly with stale perfume but riding it out is what the theaters will do until the another movie will move in. Will it compete though? A famous quote straight from Claire’s mouth is in response to Mia’s comment about the business Mia: “Don’t worry your little head about it.” Claire: “My head isn’t little. It’s just that my breasts are humongous”. They are! This movie hopes to be just as big but again it’s a gamble. Thank you Paramount for this screening.
