Rom-Com month is in the air. With J. Lo’s “Marry Me” being released this valentine’s weekend, she has company with Jason Orley’s “I Want You Back“ also streaming on Prime Video staring Charlie Day, Jenny Slate, Scott Eastwood (Clint’s son), Gina Rodriguez, Manny Jacinto and Mason Gooding. The premise, in short, is about love couples being dumped by their significant others for what ever reason given at the moment. Some are in crummy careers while other so happen to work close to each other.
Peter (Charlie Day) and his English teacher/girlfriend (Rodriguez) call it quits as well as Noah (Eastwood) and his mate Emma (Jenny Slate) end their long term. Peter and Emma meet in the stairwell as total strangers and soon realize they both have been dropped. They devise a plan to win their exes back by sabotaging their new relationships. Dr. Phil, Help!
Noah’s new lover Ginny (Clark Backo) trys to keep it real by gluing their new life together by marrying on a river boat. Meanwhile Anne chases after drama teacher (Jacito) and a threesome with Emma damn near materializes. It looked promising but the rating wasn’t meant for it. One of the highlights came about when Charlie Day’s character hid in a laundry hamper in the bedroom where sex was happening. My only question here is in order for his ass to hop in the hamper, he threw all the clothes out of it in the room. It went unnoticed by the couple. How did they not see that? Then there’s the jumping into a small hot tub from a balcony.
This is a cute rom-com with Eastwood and Rodriguez supporting the main characters Day and Slate as they pull it off with great chemistry in this R rated film for language and sexual situations with a so-so ending. This is a very busy movie on a small budget. So this valentine weekend in 2022, take your pick. “Marry Me” or “I Want You Back” or both. Rose petals are optional. Happy hunting cupid. 3 stars (out of 5).
