Another female director is trying her hand in the picture directing industry. If you remember the former tv drama a few years back House, you should certainly remember Olivia Wilde as one of the doctors. She is now trying her debut directing in Booksmart, a raunchy female version of Superbad.
The film centers around Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feidstein), two old fashioners classmates with promising roads ahead. Molly is college bound and Amy has Botswana on her mind. When both discover their other partying classmates have the same intentions, they decide on a manicial night of fun and more fun. That brings out the hornyness and volnerability making them feel on top of the world.
On their excursions they encounter disagreements with a number of students along with the school principal (Jason Sudeikis). Much of the movie is driven by romantic sexism as does their impulse to party which leads up to the happy conclusion of the film. Although this might wind up being the sleeper of the year, it could as well be a weak spot in the summer movie fare. I suppose if there can be guy movies, we can have movies geared towards the young female species too. Just think, summer is just getting started. Look for this comedy to open everywhere May, 24. 2 1/2 stars (out of 5).
