MCU phase three is here post-pandemic and Black Widow spins a web just as welcome as Spider-Man’s would be. This film, long overdue with mucho delays, is truly worth the wait. You are handed a Charlie’s Angels type with mostly females cast. The film, directed by Cate Shortland opening in theaters and some streaming outlets on July 9, is a thrill ride with women empowerment. Taking charge obviously is Scarlett Johansson in the lead role.
The story follows the Avengers divorce with Black Widow aka Natasha Romanoff running from her past after the events of “Captain America: Civil War”. She accepts a package from her sister Yelena (Florence Pugh) which sets up a chain of events starting with a red vial. She reunites with her old family but soon confronts the Red Room Programme force headed up by Ray Winstone known as Dreykov along with his programmed bad girls as she deals with her past being a spy and missed relationships pre Avenger. As this dangerous conspiracy arises more she becomes an Avenger more. She doesn’t have any super powers just her intelligence, determination and little sis Yelena who drives the plot.
Pugh’s character took the movie by storm as she was able to show her badass side as well and I would expect to see her character grow into a bigger role perhaps in the second Black Widow. This is destined a money maker and this first stand-alone for Black Widow pays off.
Black Widow spins a lot of action and comedy, compliments of David Harbour’s character Alexei. He sucks it in for his suit and that’s a site. The downside here is overkill on the cgi with heavy exaggeration as I was expecting more substance judging from the opening scenes implied. ****
