A war is coming to the surface, and it’s bringing the wrath of the seven seas with it and director James Wan is responsible. Aquaman has finally arrived in theaters to save the DC universe in a spectacular underwater fantasy/action film to bring a nice ending to the 2018 movie season. DC has seemed to fall far behind the MCU. With Wonder Woman being DC’s strongest contender last year, we now have a ball game.
Flashing back to Maine in 1985, lighthouse keeper Tom (Temuera Morrison) meets Atlanna (nicely played by Nicole Kidman) who favorite snack is goldfish. Soon Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) arrives, learns to talk to fish and after some growing stages becomes Aquaman.
We dive head-first into the ocean where a struggle of power occurs with Arthur and his half brother Kim Orm (Patrick Wilson), giving a strong performance, battling it out on the sea floor for ruler of Atlantis. If you wish to witness this see Aquaman. There are very good underwater fight scenes with the Black Manta battle especially standing out. This film has beautiful visuals with Wan operating on a lower budget than Justice League or Wonder Woman. I can only imagine what it was like for Jason Momoa acting mostly in front of a green screen and the visual graphics department filling in the blanks for a magnificent finished product. The underwater romantic scene between Arthur and Mera (Amber Heard) is epic. The cinematography and wide angle shots totally satisfied my tastes as a worthwhile standalone. Justice League and Superman v Batman were lame and didn’t do justice to the league. Aquaman makes up for all that and Wan knows how to work his cgi and rises above sea level. Pay attention to Dolph Lundgreen’s King Nereus character. He’s still got it. Now let’s see what Captain Marvel has to offer this March. Let the games begin…again. B
