Just in time for Valentine’s day is another romance flick. From director Stella Meghie comes a slow intertwining black love story. The story is first set in the 1980’s involving a young photographer Christina (Chante Adams) who has gone through relationship failures as she directly admits face on to the camera. Time lapsing shifts the story back and forth between two generations. Christina and her daughter Mae (Issa Rae). Isaac and Christina had a short-lived romance after which Christina moved from her Louisiana roots to try her career in New York. After Christina’s passing away (she’d been secretly sick) Issac took an interest in writing her story.
Christina is just a faded memory by the time we meet her daughter Mae (Issa Rae) in present day. When Mike goes researching Christina’s history the story shuffles to different time pieces and find a different Isaac (the show stealer Rob Morgan), Y’lan Noel and a house full of photographs taken with a 35mm Nikon and a 2 1/4 format camera. I know my cameras. Mae and Issac suddenly become involved with each other when she wants to add to his story. All in all this is just another old-fashioned love song with music compliments of Robert Glasper. The story could have spent more time in the dark room. Perhaps Stella could develop another story. 2 1/2 stars
