Marvel movies has really come along in the rankings and is forcing D.C. to step it up some. The pandemic is almost behind us (depending where you reside or listen to) and with the holiday’s now tail-grabbing our asses the studios are shoving the movies out the door like a pile of snow. The new Spider-Man is a month away from hitting the big giant screens. Doctor Strange is right there with the web-slinger. Before we are gifted with those and many, many others, director Chloe Zhao has gifted us with Eternals. A Marvel flick about immortals with superpowers that have made Earth their home but now are reunited to battle some armored monsters called Deviants.
To make a long review short, I will give you the CliffsNotes version as I think it will suffice. The Immortals have the ability to shoot laser beams from their eyes, do Doctor Strange things with their hands and turn swords into water. And, oh yeah, fly. The only restrictions they have is not to go against the grain of leader Arishem who posses unlimited abilities and a restricting order is in place to not to interfere with Earth’s forthcoming demise. They have other ideas though and get it done in 157 minutes.
Chloe is on the right path and even throws in some romantic vibes for good measures (and perhaps ratings). It has a deep cast with Angelina Jolie as Thena, Richard Madden who is cast as Ikaris and Salma Hayek as Ajak. There is a lot of cgi here and when one of the female characters is laying down on her back, her hair is beautifully styled and makeup in tact, clean uniform as well. Ahh, hollywood made us wait this long for a fashion show. The movie goes back thousands of years then brings up to present day.
There is so much going on that some lead characters get stiffed with limited screen time. Kumail Nanjia who plays Kingo chases most of his time on Earth as a Bollywood star and his time in front of the camera gets little consideration. I do believe Chloe has a lot more to put on the table as the two ending credits display. The story is compliments of Ryan and Kaz Firpo and is produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore. 3 1/2 stars out of 5.
